Caring for Your gold plated jewellery

Plating is a process where a layer of gold is placed on to coat the surface of another metal. The Silver Store’s rose gold and yellow 14ct gold women’s jewellery is all solid sterling silver plated with rose gold. As the jewellery is not 100% solid gold, extra care should be taken to lengthen its lifespan of the plating. Anything plated will eventually wear with time.

To lengthen the time it takes to fade out, here are easy ways on keeping the luster of your gold plated jewellery.

1. Minimise Scratching

Avoid sleeping in your jewellery, it causes far more wear than most people realise.
Keep pendants separate so they don’t rub against each other.
Rings and bracelets naturally receive the most contact during wear, so surface marks are normal.
Avoid letting jewellery rub against zips, desks, gym equipment, or other hard surfaces.
Do not put jewellery in your mouth, teeth will scratch silver instantly.

2. Be Mindful When Layering

Wearing more than one necklace chains together or more than one pendant on the same chain time will greatly increased wear of plating. Rings and bracelets are very prone to fast wear of plating due to contact with other items while worn on hands or wrists.

3. Store Your Jewellery Safely

To avoid scratches, wrap your jewellery in a soft cloth after cleaning or keep it in a jewellery box separate from other types of jewellery you have. Small zip-locks work great.
Store like items together. Do not store gold plating and silver plating together. The different metals will cause each other to tarnish, fade and/or turn colours. Have different storage places for different colours of metals like gold and rose gold. Store in a dry area.

4. Cleaning Your Gold

After every use, clean your plated jewellery with a cotton ball or a very soft cloth to remove any dust and dirt. Gently rubbing the surface of your gold plated jewellery using a soft jewellery cloth, helps to restore shine. Do *not* use a polishing cloth as this will strip away the plating.
If your jewellery needs more cleaning you may clean it with warm, soapy water. Soak it for a few minutes and you may clean it with a soft cloth. Stay away from jewellery cleaners and antibacterial soaps which may have certain components that will make your gold plated jewellery tarnish more quickly.

5. Remove when sleeping

Remove jewellery before you sleep in your plated jewellery as this will reduce the amount of wear.

6. Avoid Chemicals

Do not spray on perfume or other sprays while wearing your gold-plated jewellery.
Wait until your lotion or cream is dry or has been absorbed by your skin before you wear your gold plated ring, bracelet or necklace.
Substances like oil, nail polish, nail polish remover, chlorine, and perfume may react with metal/plated jewellery and cause it to tarnish. This is also true for sweat, so make sure you remove your gold plated jewellery when you exercise or doing anything requiring heavy work and when swimming.

7. Gold plated jewellery

Rose gold and yellow gold‑plated pieces require extra care as the plating is more delicate than solid silver. You can find our plating care tips here.

8. Warranty

The Silver Store warranty covers manufacturing faults only. Normal wear, including scratches, tarnish, link breakage, and changes in appearance, is expected with delicate precious‑metal sterling silver jewellery and is not covered.

How Long Does it take for delivery

Delivery time is generally under 5 workings days for orders that include engraved items for delivery within Australia.

Please note during two weeks prior to our busiest periods of Christmas, Valentines, Mother’s and Fathers day it is best to allow some extra time.

We are an Australian small business and engrave all items in-house and ship from Australia.

does the silver store offer engraving?

Yes! We can engrave almost anything. It's easy to order just choose the items you want engraved and you can add text, symbols or even a photo. We even engrave fingerprints, paw prints, handwriting or logos. We will position nicely and remove background where necessary.

Can I pick up my order?

We are online only and do not do pickups.

Will the engraved pendant look exactly like my design?

The design preview on our website will help you picture what your engraving will look like. Please note that this is a drawing not an engraving. Our engraver will endeavour to match your design closely but it will not be exactly the same. In general, the engraving will be centralised on the product unless specifically requested. We have years of engraving experience and will endeavour to make your design look it's best.
