Caring For Your Gold Jewellery

How do I take care of my jewellery?

Plating is a process where a layer of gold is placed on to coat the surface of another metal. The Silver Store’s rose gold and yellow 14ct gold women’s jewellery is all solid sterling silver plated with rose gold. As the jewellery is not 100% solid gold, extra care should be taken to lengthen its lifespan of the plating. Anything plated will eventually wear with time.

To lengthen the time it takes to fade out, here are easy ways on keeping the luster of your gold plated jewellery.

  • Do not spray on perfume or other sprays while wearing your gold-plated jewellery.
  • Wait until your lotion or cream is dry or has been absorbed by your skin before you wear your gold plated ring, bracelet or necklace.
  • Substances like oil, nail polish, nail polish remover, chlorine, and perfume may react with metal/plated jewellery and cause it to tarnish. This is also true for sweat, so make sure you remove your gold plated jewellery when you exercise or doing anything requiring heavy work and when swimming.
  • Remove jewellery before you sleep in your plated jewellery as this will reduce the amount of wear.
  • Try not to shower or exercise in your jewellery to avoid sweat and shampoos and body wash coming into contact.
  • After every use, clean your plated jewellery with a cotton ball or a very soft cloth to remove any dust and dirt. Gently rubbing the surface of your gold plated jewellery using a soft jewellery cloth, helps to restore shine. Do *not* use a polishing cloth as this will strip away the plating.
  • If your jewellery needs more cleaning you may clean it with warm, soapy water. Soak it for a few minutes and you may clean it with a soft cloth. Stay away from jewellery cleaners and antibacterial soaps which may have certain components that will make your gold plated jewellery tarnish more quickly.
  • To avoid scratches, wrap your jewellery in a soft cloth after cleaning or keep it in a jewellery box separate from other types of jewellery you have. Small zip-locks work great.
  • Wearing more than one necklace chains together or more than one pendant on the same chain time will greatly increased wear of plating. Rings and bracelets are very prone to fast wear of plating due to contact with other items while worn on hands or wrists.
  • Store like items together. Do not store gold plating and silver plating together. The different metals will cause each other to tarnish, fade and/or turn colours. Have different storage places for different colours of metals like gold and rose gold. Store in a dry area.

CARING FOR YOUR SILVER JEWELLERY

How Do I Take Care Of My Jewellery?

It is a common misconception that ‘real’ silver jewellery does not scratch or oxidise. In fact sterling silver jewellery (925) is a made from a precious metal which is softer than other non precious metals such as stainless steel and needs care. All sterling silver will oxidise (tarnish) with time. But properly maintained silver jewellery improves with age and develops a lush patina. Treat your silver well, care for it properly and it will reward you with a long life and a lustrous look.

The girls from The Silver Store wear their silver jewellery everyday, even light exercise and shower in it but here are some tips for bringing the shine back to your sterling silver pieces and caring for your silver pieces.

  • Avoid sleeping in your jewellery this will increase the life span, you will be surprised how much wear sleeping in jewellery produces.
  • Avoid scratches by reducing pendants rubbing against another items, including other pieces of jewellery, zips and bracelets rubbing on desks etc and avoid putting it in mouth.
  • Layering or stacking jewellery  or wearing more than one pendant on the same chain will greatly increase the wear and tear.
  • Storing  silver jewellery when not wearing it in a place which will not be moving  – handbags, sport bags and cars glove boxes are not good places to leave jewellery in as they move and the jewellery will rub and scratch.
  • Clean your silver jewellery with a mild soap and water solution, allowing the water to bead up, and then patting dry with a very soft cloth. For more stubborn dirt, use a cleaning cloth designed for silver use.
  • Store your silver in a cool, dry place, preferably in a tarnish-preventive bag or wrapped in the soft pouch and small zip lock bag they arrived in.  Definitely do not leave in the bathroom as the moist air will cause it to tarnish quicker.
  • Store pieces individually so that they don’t knock together and scratch.
  • Do not rub silver with anything other than a polishing cloth. Tissue paper or paper towels can cause scratches because of the fibres in these products.
  • Make sure your silver is not exposed to air and light during storage, wearing it more often actually slows the tarnish process.
  • Don’t wear sterling silver in chlorinated pools or spas or when working with household chemicals such as bleaches.
  • Avoid spraying jewellery with perfumes or contact with shampoos and skin creams, especially creams that help treat acne or AHA or similar acidic creams that help exfoliate the skin.

You can quickly and easily remove any tarnish with use of a special Silver Cloth to renew the brilliance and shine,  our polishing cloths also slow down the tarnishing process so you don’t have to use the cloth often.

Please note: rose gold or yellow gold plated jewellery need more care than full silver jewellery you will find some helpful tips here.
